SPRAVATO (esketamine)
What is SPRAVATO®?
- SPRAVATO® is the only FDA-approved nasal spray for TRD
- SPRAVATO® is an NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptor antagonist that is believed to work differently by acting on a pathway in the brain that affects glutamate which is the most abundant neurotransmitter (chemical messenger) in the brain.
Why SPRAVATO®?
If you’ve taken two or more oral antidepressants and still experience symptoms of depression, you might have treatment-resistant depression(TRD).
It might be time to talk to your doctor about a different treatment approach.
SPRAVATO® is for use in conjunction with an oral antidepressant for:
- Adults with treatment resistant depression, who have had inadequate response to 2 or more oral antidepressants.
- Depressive symptoms in adults with MDD with acute suicidal ideation or behavior (MDSI)
Limitations of Use:
- SPRAVATO® is not for use as a medicine to prevent or relieve pain (anesthetic).
- It is not known if SPRAVATO® is safe or effective as an anesthetic medicine.
- It is not known if SPRAVATO® is safe and effective for use in preventing suicide or in reducing suicidal thoughts or actions.
- SPRAVATO® is not for use in place of hospitalization if your healthcare provider determines that hospitalization is needed, even if improvement is experienced after the first dose of SPRAVATO®.
- SPRAVATO® is not approved for use in children.
